Summer '05 Winds Down

Looking back over this past summer, I'm pretty proud of the amount of my time I was able to use productively. In fact I'm ashamed to admit that it's been a while since I made good use of my summer, but then I also was working far less this year than in the past, so that made a difference. I was always exhausted or just simply fried. I actually was somewhat selfish and took some time to just reconnect and get myself centered again and just plain have some good old-fashioned fun.

Speaking of which, my good buddy Chad swung by the first part of August for a visit. It was awesome having him in town and showing him the sights of Columbus. We even managed to spend the better part of a day up at Cedar Point, the Roller Coast. I just gotta plug Cedar Point. If you haven't been there in a while or if you've never been to it and love roller coasters, you owe it to yourself to spend a day there. Even in the blistering 98 degree heat, Chad and I managed to have a blast. (Although we did have to go sit in my VUE with the A/C on full blast for about an hour in the in the early evening.) Oh and if anyone out there needs someone to accompany them, just say the word.

The remainder of August up to this point and the foreseeable future will be spent working on organizing and preparing my classroom and my lessons. I'm pretty pleased with the way things are shaping up. My room is starting to feel like my own and not just some place I've stored my stuff. I think my lessons and the activities I plan will be crucial to my success at Mifflin International Alternative Middle School (whew!), and I'm really gonna focus on projects similar to the ones I've been doing with my students at the Saturday morning classes at the Columbus College of Art & Design. I want some really nice group and individual display pieces. Stuff that the kids will care about and take pride in. Once I win them over then I can really start experimenting with different stuff. But I have to gain their confidence and respect first. I need to gain credibility in their eyes if I'm ever gonna hope to get anywhere with them.

Well, that pretty much brings everything up to speed. On a side note--Chad, thanks for the concert CD. I will mail you the original along with the artwork you left behind as soon as I figure out how I'm gonna package both of them. Here's hoping I manage to get back here before too much time passes. Later.
